Summary:
This paper considers the evidence of the impact and effectiveness of conditionality in the UK welfare system. It reviews the evidence from the operation of conditionality in the UK welfare state over the last decade, considers comparative evidence from other international welfare systems and draws lessons for future policy from behavioural economics and social psychology.
